Ghazal king Jagjit Singh Dies at 70

He has sung in several language including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali. Jagjit Singh enter the music circuit at a time which was first and foremost dominated by Pakistani ghazal singers, and Indian singers were careful relatively lesser genuine than their Pakistani counterpart.

Unlike other ghazal singers, Singh did not hesitate in lending his voice for films. His glossy voice ruled during early 80's in films like Prem Geet, Saath Saath and Arth. on the other hand, his major work is spread over more than 60 filmy and non-filmy albums.

Jagjit Singh was also known for contemporary come up to and infusion of expertise in the traditional art of ghazal singing. Singh was the first Indian music director to use the method of multi-track footage for his album 'Beyond Time'.

Renowned singer Jagjit Singh, known as much for his ghazals and bhajans as for his work in Hindi cinema, died here on Monday after a brain haemorrhage. He was 70 and is survived by his wife Chitra Singh.

Jagjit Singh had been in hospital for more than a few weeks. He was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital following supposed brain haemorrhage, an official source said. The hospital establishment remained tight-lipped about the exact nature of his medical situation and its seriousness. Jagjit Singh has had a the past of heart ailments. The 70-year-old singer also suffer from hypertension.

He gave voice to classic numbers like "Kal chaudhavin ki raat", "Honthon se chhoo lo tum", "Koi ye kaise bataaye", "Woh kaagaz ki kashti", "Chitthi Na Koi Sandesh", "Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho", "Yeh daulat bhi le lo, yeh shohrat bhi le lo", "Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya", "Jhuki jhuki si nazar", "Shaam se aankh mein namin si hai", "Badi nazuk hai", "Hoshwaalon ko khabar kya" and "Kiska chehra".

Popularly known as "The Ghazal King", he gained acclaim together with his wife in the 1970s and 1980s, as the first ever successful duo act (husband-wife) in the history of record Indian music.

His popular ghazals include, Meri zindagi kisi aur ki, mere naam ka koi aur hai, Apni marzi se kahan apne safar ke hum hain, Wo jo hum mein tumme qaraar tha, Patta-patta boota-boota haal hamaara jaane hai, Hoshwalo ko khabar, etc.
